Sustainable furniture in Norfolk

Bespoke Handcrafted Furniture and the Environment

Here at Bespoke Handcrafted Furniture we are fortunate to be situated in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, close to the border with Suffolk in the village of Pulham Market. We create sustainable furniture in Norfolk, and we want to do as much as we can to protect and preserve our surroundings, not just for us but for the pleasure of everybody else too.

Our environment is important to us which is why we endeavour to do as much as we can to reduce our impact on the ever changing environment and atmosphere. We choose timber as it's a natural renewable source, and the most environmentally friendly raw material available for use in trades.

Suppliers

As makers of sustainable furniture in Norfolk, we only source timber and other wood derived materials from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved, and responsibly sourced suppliers. Wherever it's achievable and possible we source locally from other conscientious suppliers who also care about their impact on the environment.

Waste Management

We are always maintaining great efforts to recycle as much of our waste as possible. As a small business it's inevitable that we produce waste, however it's what we do with it that counts. We ensure that any recyclable waste products produced as part of our business are responsibly recycled in the appropriate manner.

Wood waste and heating our workshop

The vast majority of our waste is created by the wood and wooden derived materials themselves. Off-cuts of timber, sheet materials, wood shavings and wood dust are our main contributors, but we've devised a perfect solution for this inevitable waste. The main source of heat for our workshop is by using our own wood waste products. We use these to heat the workshop with a very efficient saw dust and wood burning stove, making our main waste impact on the environment as small as possible. Not only does our wood-burner warm us up with solid wood off cuts, it's also designed to work extremely efficiently by fuelling it with the wood shavings and dust collected in bags by our extractor system. This is a very sustainable source of heating for us throughout the chilly winter months.

Energy

Of course for normal operation of our working day electricity has to be used, we are looking at ways to improve our usage. Our workshop is now fully equipped with energy efficient LED lighting which has reduced our energy usage, significantly lowering our carbon footprint and energy impact on the environment. At a later date, solar panels will be the next stage of improvement to help reduce our usage.

Packaging

The vast majority of our suppliers send us materials such as hinges, drawer runners and other ironmongery products in cardboard boxes with internal protective paper wrapping, all of which we're able to recycle efficiently, reducing our impact on the environment.

At Bespoke Handcrafted Furniture we create sustainable furniture in Norfolk. We use packaging to protect your project during transit from our workshop to your home or business. We buy two forms of protective packaging, a shrink wrap film which has a 30% recycled content, and protective foam rolls. This protective foam is fully recyclable polythene and is made with a CNC-free formula which means it is environmentally friendly in comparison to others. We also use blankets and cushions whilst transporting your bespoke furniture, both of which are re-useable multitudes of times.

Finishing Products

We are proud that all of our primers, undercoats, lacquers and pigmented colour paints are water-based. This means they have a low-VOC content and have a minimal impact on the environment and atmosphere in comparison to solvent based alternatives. We also use Osmo Oil products, which is a naturally derived finish made from fully sustainable natural plant based oils and hard waxes. This product does not use wax from bees, and is also vegan-friendly which we think is great.

Committed to Improvement

Here at Bespoke Handcrafted Furniture we are continuously endeavouring to further improve our environmental impact, whilst creating sustainable furniture in Norfolk. Wherever achievable and possible we use responsibly sourced and sustainable materials. We use suppliers who also have the same environmental ethos as we do. Bespoke Handcrafted Furniture is always striving towards a better environmental future.
